Dan's Report

August 2 2010

Dear Friends,

It’s amazing to look back at the challenges, changes, and accomplishments that have taken place since my arrival here at New Horizons Ministries. During the past 19 months we said goodbye to Rita Nussli, our ministry’s longest serving Executive Director. We twice reduced and restructured our organization to weather the harshest economic conditions of a lifetime. And with God’s help, on July 1 we were able to begin our new fiscal year with a balanced budget. In the midst of these challenges we stepped out in faith and opened Street Bean Espresso – extending our continuum of care, providing sustainable employment for young people, and creating a new public face in the midst of Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood for New Horizons Ministries.

Over this same time we served significantly more young people, providing more hot meals, more showers, more laundry, and more care. A record number of young people completed our Adaptive Life Skills Mentorship Program and many transitioned into housing, employment, and other opportunities following graduation. Our Late Night Outreach has grown and expanded, and is now a nationally recognized program.

This highlights just a few of the things that have been accomplished over the past year and a half. But no healthy ministry can long survive by looking to the past.

Our board members and I have been prayerfully looking ahead to the future of New Horizons Ministries. After much discussion and discernment, we came to understand that God brought me here as a transitional leader to see us through a time such as this. Now that we find ourselves planted on solid footing, we felt it was time for me to step aside and provide space for God to bring a long term leader to New Horizons to help sustain our ministry.

This is, by far, the hardest decision I have ever faced as a leader, but one that has brought with it a tremendous sense of peace and affirmation. God loves this ministry with the same deep passion God shows for the homeless and street involved young people we serve.

I want to thank you for the many wonderful ways you have supported me during my time of leadership here - through cards, letters, phone calls and words of encouragement, through your financial gifts, and most importantly through prayer. Please continue to pray for and support New Horizons Ministries and the tremendous work they are doing with young people on the streets. This ministry remains vital, life changing, and a living representation of God’s hands and heart reaching out with love to the streets.

With Deep Appreciation,

Dan
